Law Students do Halloween in Lex

Every October students at Washington and Lee University shed their daily uniform of suits and/or sweats to show off their creative side…or attempt to at least. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I am talking about SBA’s Halloween Party.

The party took place on Saturday, October 28th in the Dell. Unexpected and unwelcome rain showers early in the evening suggested that the already close community at W&L was going to take their relationship with one another to the next level by being forced to stay in the tent with no chance of escape.

Thankfully, nothing more serious than sprinkling occurred during the event, allowing students to escape the humidity of the tent. Unfortunately, there was no escaping the mud. After a brief, but scream-filled power outage around 10 o’clock, no other mishaps occurred.

The costume game this year was incredibly strong. David S. Pumpkins made an appearance. Three raccoon trash pandas crashed the party. Kit Thomas and Zac Crawford arrived as French Kiss, which gets points for being comfy, creative, and cute. Mr. Macado showed up with his monocle, though few people were astute enough to figure this out. Ben Nye appeared as himself, which gets points for originality. Two Harley Quinns decided to join the party, which meant one for each Hugh Hefner.

Ke$ha (Jackie Hacker, 3L) even made an appearance and had this to say: “So I grabbed the bear by the throat, looked him right in the eyes, and I said, ‘Bear, you have until the count of zero to put some pants on and apologize to the President.’ And um…that’s the story of how I was elected to the Parliament in Uzbekistan.”

Apparently, a lot of other students wanted to relive their childhood, because multiple Winnie-the-Pooh and friends group costumes could be found. Also, plenty of Dalmatians came to party with Cruella hot on their heels.

Per tradition, no Halloween Party is complete without a costume contest. The SBA decided to up the number of categories this year to three—individual, duo, and group.

It couldn’t have been easy, but around 11pm, the judges had narrowed down the winners. Lola Bunny won for best individual costume, which meant poor Bugs was left out in the cold. Forrest Gump and Lieutenant Dan indisputably won the best duo. While the LA Croix Gang took the champagne for best group.

Of course, the judges’ decisions didn’t come without controversy. Matt Bass passionately argued, “Raccoons/trash pandas should’ve won the group costume contest.” However, as we all know, the SBA isn’t a democracy and recounting votes is so 2000 or, depending on the state, 2016.

All in all, this Halloween Bash was a success in spite of the weather. As always, the SBA pulled off the impossible and managed to get law students out of the library and away from their all-important outlines. The free pizza and alcohol definitely helped.

*Just kidding, we don’t get paid at all.
